Effective date: October 4, 2026 · App version 1.0
GrillIt collects no personal data and sends none to us.
Your cook log stays on your device and in your own iCloud account. We have no servers, no analytics, and no way to access your information. The one exception is optional: tapping Use Current Weather sends an approximate location to a free weather service so it can return today's conditions. What data does the app store?
GrillIt stores only what you enter:
- Your grills — name, type, fuel type, make and model, usual fuel brand, notes, and their order
- Your cooks — the meat, weight or count, price, prep, rub and sauce, cooking method, temperatures, thermometer, fuel, smoke wood, start / move / finish times, rating, and notes
- Temperature checks you log during a cook
- Weather you record or fill in with Use Current Weather
- Photos you add to a cook
- The name you enter for sharing, and any cooks friends send you that you choose to open
This data is stored in two places only: locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework, and in your personal iCloud account if iCloud is enabled. Neither location is accessible to us.
Use Current Weather and your location
The weather lookup only happens when you tap Use Current Weather on a cook. When you do:
- GrillIt asks iOS for your location (the first time, iOS asks your permission — "While Using the App" only).
- The location is rounded to about a kilometer (two decimal places) before it leaves your phone.
- That rounded location is sent to Open-Meteo, a free weather service, which returns the current temperature, wind, humidity and sky conditions. (Weather data by Open-Meteo.com, used under the CC BY 4.0 license.) No account, name, device ID, or other information is sent with it.
- Only the weather is saved with your cook — your location is not stored.
You never have to use it: you can type the weather in yourself, or leave it blank, and GrillIt never touches your location. You can turn location off any time in Settings → GrillIt → Location.
Photos and camera
Add Photos uses Apple's photo picker, so GrillIt only ever receives the specific pictures you choose — it can't see the rest of your library. Take Photo asks for camera permission the first time. Photos you add are resized to phone size and stored with your cook, on your device and in your iCloud account. They are never sent anywhere else.
Does the app collect analytics or crash reports?
No. GrillIt contains no analytics SDK, no crash reporting service, and no telemetry of any kind. We receive no data about how you use the app.
Does the app use advertising or tracking?
No. There are no ads, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs. Apart from the optional weather lookup above, the app makes no network requests to any server we operate or any third-party service.
iCloud sync
If you have iCloud enabled on your device, your data syncs to Apple's iCloud servers under your own Apple ID. This sync is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no access to your iCloud data.
Sharing a cook with a friend
GrillIt never shares anything on its own. When you tap Share on a cook, it hands a PDF of that one cook (with its photos) and (if you choose "Send to a GrillIt User") a small file containing the cook and the name you entered to the iOS share sheet. You decide where it goes — Messages, Mail, AirDrop. It travels through that service, not through us. A cook a friend sends you is only added to GrillIt when you open the file yourself.
Backups
Export Backup in Settings creates one file with your grills, cooks and photos and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Where it goes — Files, Dropbox, an email to yourself — is entirely up to you. GrillIt never uploads it anywhere on its own.
Notifications
GrillIt does not send notifications and requests no notification permission.
Children's privacy
GrillIt does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app contains no features directed at children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above and note the change in the app's release notes.
